CASE STUDY:
IoT Auckland Meetups
Internet of Things Auckland has been hosting events in conjunction with us throughout 2019, from regular monthly meetups to hackathons and workshops. These have been an important bridge between our academic staff and their industry members.
THE
CHALLENGE
Internet of Things (IoT) Auckland Meetup raises awareness of the potential advantages a connected world could bring, and how people can use this technology in positive ways. To do this, the team needed a space where they could bring people together, ideally from a range of different audiences.
John McDermott from IoT Auckland Meetup wanted the events to be a useful insight into the ‘real world’ of putting technology into action.
HOW WE
HELPED
NIP has been providing space for IoT Auckland Meetup’s events and offering support to organise them. Alongside the regular monthly meetups, they also ran hackathons and workshops.
John said that being able to use an event space with great facilities has resulted in regular attendance from people and it encourages new people to come along to find out about IoT technology. The partnership also means the organisation has been able to host University researchers to present on their work, creating a bridge between academic staff industry to show new techniques and approaches to solving problems.
A successful 2019 means John and the team have a strong foundation to build on for 2020. “I’ve recently partnered with the NZ IoT Alliance as they see the success of the IoT Auckland Meetup as a foundation for more events connecting their members with a wider community,” he says. “We can use our base at NIP to reach more people, businesses and other organisations to explain and encourage the opportunities from IoT applications.”
